Panel "Moving the U.S. Health System Forward with HIE"
Electronic medical information is one of the most important care support tools available in health care today. EHR functionality is greatly enhanced when providers can exchange patient data in a meaningful way. However, with patient data siloed across large, diverse geographic areas, and with privacy and security concerns, nation-wide health information exchange is a very complicated task. Exchanging ePHI between provider-provider and patient-provider is paramount in realizing the full potential of health IT.
This session will address:
- ∙ Developing critical physician and patient participation
- ∙ Eliminating redundancy
- ∙ Impacting public health
- ∙ Integrating patient facing technology in HIE

Stakeholder engagement is a critical success factor for the effective use of EHRs and other health IT and patients are one of the last, and most important, groups to get involved in this process. While EHRs continue to evolve and technologies like patient portals become more common, providers have the opportunity to drive improvements in quality by encouraging patients to become an active participant in their own care.
