Panel Discussion “Health Information Exchange: A Vehicle for Overcoming Health Care Challenges”
Supporting the adoption of electronic health records among healthcare providers and building the infrastructure necessary to make HIE possible, are essential components to improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of health care. Additionally, HIE gives doctors and other clinicians a more comprehensive understanding of their patients’ full medical histories, which helps them deliver better care. Electronic health records provide patients with more information about the care and treatments they receive and empower patients to be more involved in the health care decisions that impact them and their families.
This session will discuss a range of challenges and objectives of health information exchange including:
- ∙ Improving healthcare quality and outcomes
∙ Reducing health disparities
∙ Reducing medical errors and enhancing coordination of care - ∙ Maintaining interoperability standards & stakeholder engagement
∙ Sustainable funding & support for information exchange
Moderator: Lynne Dunbrack, Program Director, IDC Health Insights
Brian Ahier, Health IT Evangelist, Mid-Columbia Medical Center
Greg Fraser, MD, MBI, Chief Medical Information Officer, WVP Health Authority

Panel “Security & Privacy in Health IT: A Fresh Look at Strategies & Risk Assessment”
The current security risks for ePHI are well known and HIPAA updates continue to maintain security in both policy and in action. That said, the risks today are not the risks we faced just five years ago or those we will face five years from now. As new technologies evolve and access to ePHI becomes more prevalent, it is critical to have a security plan in place that will change proactively as new technologies are implemented and new stakeholders are incorporated into the healthcare landscape.
This session will help participants:
- ∙ Establish priorities for a cyber security plan
- ∙ Assess and act on risk analysis
- ∙ Mitigate legal exposure
- ∙ Understand breach prevention & protocol
- ∙ Minimize the economic impact of an ePHI breach
