Panel Discussion “Health Information Exchange: A Vehicle for Overcoming Health Care Challenges”

Supporting the adoption of electronic health records among healthcare providers and building the infrastructure necessary to make HIE possible, are essential components to improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of health care.  Additionally, HIE gives doctors and other clinicians a more comprehensive understanding of their patients’ full medical histories, which helps them deliver better care. Electronic health records provide patients with more information about the care and treatments they receive and empower patients to be more involved in the health care decisions that impact them and their families.

This session will discuss a range of challenges and objectives of health information exchange including:

    1.    ∙ Improving healthcare quality and outcomes
         ∙ Reducing health disparities
∙ Reducing medical errors and enhancing coordination of care
    2.    ∙ Maintaining interoperability standards & stakeholder engagement
∙ Sustainable funding & support for information exchange

Before we get too excited, this panel will touch on Meaningful Use but not how you think.  With all the focus on qualifying for Stage 2 and what future stages will look like, it is important to take a step back and consider what life will look like after Meaningful Use.  With MU incentives scheduled to end in 2015, it’s never too soon to think about life without MU and how we can continue to drive improvements in quality, safety and cost effectiveness.

    This session will address:

    1.    ∙ Driving IT post-Meaningful Use
∙ The long term picture of the health IT landscape
         ∙ What comes next?

     1:15 - 2:15pm

Panel “Security & Privacy in Health IT: A Fresh Look at Strategies & Risk Assessment”

The current security risks for ePHI are well known and HIPAA updates continue to maintain security in both policy and in action.  That said, the risks today are not the risks we faced just five years ago or those we will face five years from now.  As new technologies evolve and access to ePHI becomes more prevalent, it is critical to have a security plan in place that will change proactively as new technologies are implemented and new stakeholders are incorporated into the healthcare landscape.

    This session will help participants:

    1.    ∙ Establish priorities for a cyber security plan
    2.    ∙ Assess  and act on risk analysis
